Course Description:  Database Management and Business Intelligence course provides an introduction to the management of database systems and the use of data in business. The course emphasizes the understanding of the fundamentals of relational systems including data models, database architectures, and database manipulations. The course also provides a basic understanding of new Business Intelligence/Analytics developments and trends, as well as Data Visualization concepts. The course uses (1) an applied, problem-based approach to learning and (2) case studies and practioner articles to appreciate current uses of database solutions.

Course Description:  The Integrated Core Experience (ICE) is carefully constructed to give students a vantage into the world of business from multiple angles, integrating the analytic, strategic, and behavioral skills they’ll need to tackle real-world problems, with projects from corporate sponsors. ICE is required for all third-year students, with 12 credit hours in the fall semester and 9 credit hours in the spring semester.

Course Description:  Module 1 brings students in both sections of the program together for three consecutive weekend sessions on the Grounds of the University of Virginia. This brief but intense technology experience will expose you to McIntire’s way of looking at information technology, which is based on the philosophy of designing IT systems that meet the needs of the business enterprise and add economic value.

Course Description:  This course examines the organizational role of data management systems and focuses on a practical introduction to the design and use of relational databases, using a realistic SQL querying environment. After understanding what a database is and how to use it, we explore topics that focus on leveraging the power of a wide variety of data management solutions, such as data warehousing, business intelligence, data mining, customer relationship management, dashboards and data visualization, non-structured data sources using technologies like Hadoop and NOSQL, and sentiment analysis.

 

Introduction to Information Systems in Business

Course Description:  Students learn how information systems and technologies are applied in modern organizations and society. They gain an understanding of the management of IS and IT and their use by diverse individuals, groups, and organizations. This is required for all Terry College students (both MIS and non-MIS).

 

Computer Security & Data Assurance (CMIT 421)

Course Description:  An introduction to the techniques and methods used in securing computers and networks. Students will be able to understand, appreciate, and manage: (1) breadth of technologies involved in computer security and data assurance, (2) cryptology and common software protocols involved in security, (3) network structure and management of systems access, and (4) the impact of and importance of managing people in computer security.

 

Systems Analysis & Design (MIST 4620)

Course Description:  This course focuses on systems analysis and design with emphasis on the development of business application systems. Methods of system documentation are examined through the use of object-oriented tools and techniques for describing processes, use cases, data structures, system objects, input and output designs, and program specifications.
